Marching Light
the Fine Art Photography of
Eric Anthony Sarti

Landscapes, Canyon Color, and Fall leaves.
These are images of large format photography taken throughout
the West, from Yosemite National Park to the Arizona slot canyons.  From the subtle light
as seen in "Dogwood Heaven" right after the rain stops, to the glow
of a slot canyon with reflected sandstone light, in "Ceiling Fan",
take time out to watch the Marching Light.    -eas 05/13/02

"Ceiling Fan"
This was taken in the depths of Lower Antelope Canyon, Page, Arizona, sometime before noon, just as the light was reflecting off the sandstone walls perfectly, creating this luminescent seen here. Deep metallic reds, oranges and yellows. It was in shadow shortly after. Shot with Canham 4x5" Metal View Camera, my 180 or 110mm. Kodak 100VS transparency film. I found that 100VS creates much more tangerine like colors in the slot canyons than velvia, and is my film of choice now for these colors.

"All Dogwoods Go To Heaven"
This image was taken in Yosemite Valley in the Fall of 1998, around mid-October, in the morning right after the wind and rain stopped. It was an unusually wet year, and there are still leaves on this tree. It rained the four days I was there, culminating in first snow atop Halfdome. The Dogwood and Ponderosa Pine are saturated with water, producing those deep chestnut browns in the branches, and deep orange color in the leaves. I go back to this spot every year, and it hasn't had the same candyland look since. You can see the granite cliffs in the background in mist along with the Jeffrey pines, and maples. Taken with a 4x5" Wisner Technical View Camera, with Schneider 110mmXL lens, f22, Fuji Velvia pushed +1, metered on leaves on ground.

"Forest Morning"
Marching Light. This is it. The light popping up from somewhere over my right shoulder in Yosemite, piercing its way through trees, after the rain. I stood out there with my umbrella since an hour earlier, a few people asking me "so what are you waiting for", and walked away. Then the rain stopped and the light marched through. Amazing contrast. Taken with Mamiya 7 (one of a few medium format transparencies at 6x7cm), 65mm lens, Fuji Velvia. Cropped and printed square only.

"Yellow Maple Rising"
Yellow Maple Rising and Fall Galaxy were taken in the same general area in Yosemite Valley, one up closer, you can still see the water on the leaves from the rain. There are so many details in the tiny maple leafs and ferns on the ground, and lots of color even in the far background. The branches are deep brown. When I first saw these using a loop, I couldn't believe the detail. Shot with a Wisner 4x5" Technical, Schneider 110XL f45! Tack Sharp! Fuji Velvia

"Kolob Afternoon"
This is taken in one of the fingers of Zion's Kolob Canyons. The walls glow red and purple as they reflect back on each other. The cottonwoods just glow in the fall near late afternoon. Shot with a Canham 4x5" using a 180mm lens. Zion in the late fall, first week in November or earlier, is amazing. I will post a larger image later.
